Kenya on Thursday called on the African Union to continue leading discussions on the Nile dam operations in Ethiopia, even as Egypt warned that Ethiopia’s mega hydro power project was “an existential threat.” At a session of the UN Security Counci...

Tunisia pushing UN action on Ethiopia dam, Ethiopia opposed

AFRICA, DEVELOPMENT, Egypt, ETHIOPIA, RELATIONS, Sudan
Tunisia has proposed the UN Security Council push for a binding agreement between Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt on the operation of a giant hydropower dam within six months, according to a draft resolution on Wednesday. Tunisia circulated the draft text to the 15-member Security Council ahead of a council meeting on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on Thursday, though it was not immediately clear when it could be put to a vote. A senior Ethiopian diplomat in New York told Reuters the draft resolution would "effectively scuttle" an African Union-led mediation process between the three countries, and Ethiopia was working to make sure that it would not be adopted. "Africa is watching and watching closely because the precedence is huge to bear and disrupts African Unity," t...

UN urges Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan to recommit to dam talks

AFRICA, DEVELOPMENT, Egypt, ETHIOPIA, PAN AFRICA, RELATIONS, Sudan
The United Nations called on Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt on Tuesday to recommit to talks on the operation of a giant hydropower dam, urging them to avoid any unilateral action, a day after Ethiopia began filling the dam's reservoir. The UN Security Council will likely discuss the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) this week after Arab states requested the 15-member body address the issue. Ethiopia says the dam on its Blue Nile is crucial to its economic development and to provide power. But Egypt views it as a grave threat to its Nile water supplies, on which it is almost entirely dependent. Sudan, another downstream country, has expressed concern about the dam's safety and the impact on its own dams and water stations. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres backs the role o...

Sudan: Protesters call for govt resignation over IMF-backed reforms

AFRICA, CRIME, CRISIS, GOVERNMENT, NORTHERN AFRICA, PAN AFRICA, POLITICS, Sudan
Hundreds of people took to the streets on Wednesday in several cities in Sudan to demand the resignation of the government. Behind this angst are the austerity measures put in place as part of reforms supported by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). "No to the policies of international financial institutions" and "The people want the fall of the regime" were some of the slogans heard among the protesters in Khartoum, according to AFP correspondents on site. These demonstrations come less than 24 hours after the IMF announced the release of massive economic aid for Sudan, with a debt relief of 50 billion dollars, representing nearly 90% of the total debt of the country. The popular discontent has been palpable for several months and has increased after the removal of fuel s...

Sudan says open to ‘interim’ dam deal with Ethiopia

AFRICA, Climate, DIPLOMACY, Diplomats, Nature, PAN AFRICA, Sudan
Sudan will only be willing to strike an interim deal with Ethiopia over its Nile dam on conditions including assurance of further talks, the water minister said Monday. Downstream Egypt and Sudan have been pushing upstream Ethiopia to ink a binding deal over the filling and operation of its mega dam on the Blue Nile that broke ground in 2011. "Given the time constraints, Sudan will accept an interim agreement based on certain conditions which include signing on all the terms that have been already agreed," Water Minister Yasser Abbas told reporters in Khartoum. "There should also be guarantees that negotiations will continue ... and that those talks will be held within a defined timeframe." The minister said the three countries had already "reached consensus" over most tec...

Kosovo’s parliament appointed a US-educated female law professor and candidate of the ruling Vetevendosje party, Vjosa Osmani as the country’s new president. Osmani, who will serve a five-year term, is also the Balkan nation’s second female leader in the post-war period after Atifete Jahjaga, who was president from 2011 to 2016. Vjosa Osmani took over as acting president of Kosovo last November when her predecessor, Hashim Thaci, resigned ahead of his impending war crimes trial in the Netherlands. As President, she will have largely a ceremonial post as the head of state. But she also has a leading position in foreign policy and is the commander of the armed forces. Opposition parties and civil society watchdogs have criticised her appointment, saying that having ...
