The next-gen Galaxy smartwatches would arrive in mid-August, according to the same sources.Notably absent from those reports was the Galaxy S21 FE, a device that has usually been featured in various Fold 3 and Flip 3 launch rumors. Separately, stories from South Korea have claimed over the weekend that the more affordable “Fan Edition” phone would be either canceled or delayed, prompting widespread speculation from leak...

Our Huawei MatePad Pro 12.6 video review is out – our first encounter with HarmonyOS 2.0

DIGITAL, ELECTRIC, SMART PHONES, TECHNOLOGY
Our written review of the Huawei MatePad Pro 12.6 (2021) went live a couple of days ago and in the meantime we finished our video review as well. You might want to watch this one even if you’re not in the marker for a new tablet because this is our first encounter with HarmonyOS 2.0. Huawei is forging its own path here, though as it turns out that path is paved on top of Android 10. And while EMUI is front and center, some features like the desktop mode have gone missing. Also, while Huawei provides alternatives to Google apps and services (e.g. Petal Search, Petal Maps, the AppGallery), some are not so easy to replace. For example, Google’s Widevine L1 DRM is supported, but US-based streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video do not recognize it, so you’re stuck with...

Gov’t substitutes OTT with 12% tax on Data & Airtime

The Ministry of Finance has slapped a harmonized excise duty rate of 12% on airtime, value-added services and internet data as substitute for Uganda’s controversially approved Over The Top (OTT) tax. ‘‘Some tax policy interventions to be implemented in FY2021/22 include rationalizing the excise duty regime on telecommunication services,’’ state minister for finance and economic planning,  Mr Amos Lugoloobi told MPs as he presented the 2021/22 national budget tailored towards industrialization for inclusive growth, employment and wealth creation. However, the newly levied taxes that take effect July 1 will exclude access to data for internet portals providing medical and education services. Introduced in 2018, OTT tax sought to regulate access to microblogging a...

Infinix is working on a 160W fast-charging adapter

DIGITAL, ELECTRIC, SMART PHONES, TECHNOLOGY
Infinix is a Hong Kong-based smartphone company that focuses on developing markets like Nigeria, Egypt, and Indonesia. The manufacturer is know for delivering very solid specs for the price rather than groundbreaking industry innovations, but this might change. XDA-Developers shared a photo of an upcoming Infinix-branded 160W fast charger, intended for use in a future mobile phone. The adapter on the photo sure looks huge, as is to be expected for a brick this powerful. It's unclear when we'll see a phone ready to take advantage of it but it can't be long now. An alternative explanation might be that it's not meant for phones at all. Infinix has already started selling laptops with Windows and while those don't support these rates yet either one with a big graphics cards mig...

Samsung unveils 50MP ISOCELL JN1 camera sensor

DIGITAL, SMART PHONES, TECHNOLOGY
Samsung has just introduced its latest camera sensor targeted at smartphones - it is called ISOCELL JN1 and packs 50MP resolution. The size of a single pixel is just 0.64 μm, which is the smallest the Korean company has ever produced, while the entire sensor is 1/2.76” type. The sensor is made for “every smartphone, from mid-range to flagship”. It has ISOCELL 2.0 for advanced pixel isolation and reducing cross-talk. In theory, it should improve light sensitivity and color fidelity with upgraded materials between color filters that don't let light from one pixel leak into the neighboring ones. The ISOCELL JN1 comes with Tetrapixel technology that bins four pixels into one big 1.28μm pixel for bright 12.5 MP images with less noise. This also enables real-time HDR - with two exposu...

Joe Biden revokes Donald Trump’s bid to ban Americans from downloading TikTok

DIGITAL, Entertainment, SMART PHONES, Social Media
Joe Biden's new executive order comes after the Trump administration attempted to ban TikTok last year. President Joe Biden has reversed his predecessor Donald Trump's plans to ban the popular video app TikTok in the US. In a new executive order, Mr Biden revoked the Trump administration's attempt to ban the Chinese-owned app, and has instead ordered a new Commerce Department review into security concerns around data sharing and privacy. The Trump administration tried to ban new downloads of TikTok in August last year and attempted to bar US companies from doing business with ByteDance, the app's parent company in Beijing. Mr Trump also backed a takeover of ByteDance by American company Microsoft. TikTok is estimated to have more than 100 million users in the US and is ...

How Your Smartphone May Be Affecting Your Diet and Your Weight

HEALTH, LIFE STYLE, PEOPLE, SMART PHONES
Screens and teens are a combination parents try to manage for multiple reasons. A study out of South Korea adds one more reason to the list. The study analyzed data of more than 53,000 Korean adolescents from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey and found that teens who used a smartphone for more than 2 hours per day were significantly more likely to eat more processed foods and fewer fruits and vegetables than teens who put their phones down more often. Additionally, teenagers who spent more than 3 hours per day on a smartphone were significantly more likely to be overweight or obese. “These results do not surprise me considering that screen time is a totally sedentary activity occupying time in which teens could be participating in sports or other physical acti...

Don’t Rush For Next-gen consoles. The largest gaming platform is in your pocket.

Entertainment, GAMES, SMART PHONES, TEENAGERS, Youth
When the first smartphones debuted in the early 2000s, mobile gaming consisted of simplistic titles such as “Snake,” where the player leads a snakelike chain of pixels around the screen to eat other pixels and grow longer. Soon the market expanded into word games, like 2009′s “Words with Friends” and three-in-a-row matching games like “Candy Crush Saga” in 2012, both primarily played by people whittling away time on public transportation or in a doctor’s waiting room. Today, over three billion people have smartphones and over two billion of them play games on those phones. Some of those mobile titles now even rival the quality of games traditionally enjoyed on consoles and expensive PCs. A decade ago, mobile gaming was underestimated and considered “casual” by both gamers and de...

ZTE Axon 30 Ultra 5G Is Seriously A Good Value

Computing, MOBILE, SMART PHONES, TECHNOLOGY
When ZTE told us the Axon 30 Ultra 5G was en route for review, we got that fuzzy feeling inside. That's because the older Axon 20 5G was the first device we'd ever seen with an under-display selfie camera - so surely the Axon 30 Ultra would take this technology to the next level? Um, nope. Instead the Axon 30 Ultra instead has a more traditional punch-hole selfie camera front and centre, so that fuzzy feeling quickly dissipated. Without such a 'magic camera' on board what then is the appeal of this flagship? The Axon 30 Ultra is all about power and affordability. It crams a top-tier Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor into a slender body with a 6.67-inch AMOLED display that can push its refresh rate to a class-leading 144Hz. All for just £649 in the UK and $749 in the USA. So is t...
