Pentagon concerned over attacks in Iraq and Syria

INTERNATIONAL, IRAQ, SYRIA, TRAGEDY, USA
Pentagon says it is deeply concerned about attacks on US personnel in Iraq and Syria in recent days. The Pentagon said on Thursday it was deeply concerned about a series of attacks on US personnel in Iraq and Syria in recent days. "They are using lethal weaponry. I don't know how you can say anything other than it is a serious threat," Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told reporters, according to Reuters. On Wednesday, two rockets were fired at the US embassy inside Baghdad's Green Zone. The embassy's anti-rocket system diverted one of the rockets and the second rocket fell near the zone's perimeter. That attack came a day after an explosive-laden drone attacked Erbil airport in northern Iraq. The drone reportedly targeted the US base on the airport grounds. On Mon...

Drone attacks by Iraqi militias reflect Iran’s waning hold

INTERNATIONAL, IRAN, IRAQ, Middle East, RELATIONS
BAGHDAD (AP) - Iran´s expeditionary Quds Force commander brought one main directive for Iraqi militia faction leaders long beholden to Tehran, when he gathered with them in Baghdad last month: Maintain calm, until after nuclear talks between Iran and the United States. But he was met with defiance. One of the six faction leaders spoke up in their meeting: They could not stay quiet while the death of his predecessor Qassim Soleimani and senior Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis in a U.S. drone strike went unavenged. Militia attacks have only been increasing against the U.S. in military bases in both Iraq and Syria. Three missile attacks in the last week alone resulted in minor injuries, stoking fears of escalation. The details from Esmail Ghaani´s visit, confirmed to Th...

At least 14 rockets were fired against the Ain Al-Asad base on Wednesday, injuring three people, the US-led coalition said. This is not the first attack against the compound this year: back in May, it was targeted by a drone attack, but neither US nor coalition troops stationed at the base were injured. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. Initial report: At approx. 12:30 PM local time, Ain Al-Assad Air Base was attacked by 14 rockets. The rockets landed on the base & perimeter. Force protection defensive measures were activated. At this time initial reports indicate 3 minor inju...

(AFP) At least three rockets landed on Monday on the Ain al-Asad air base, which hosts US and other international forces in western Iraq, but caused no casualties, a coalition spokesman said. US Army Colonel Wayne Marotto, spokesman for the US-led international military coalition, tweeted that initial reports suggested the attack took place at 2:45 p.m.. He said the damage was being assessed. The US accuses Iran-backed militia groups of launching regular rocket attacks against its troops in Iraq. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for ...

American defense systems fired rockets into the air in Baghdad, according to AFP reporters, with Iraqi security sources saying the salvos took out a drone that was laden with explosives. Since the start of the year, 47 attacks have targeted US interests in the country, where 2,500 American troops are deployed as part of an international coalition to fight ISIS. Six of them involved these kinds of drones, a tactic that poses a headache for the coal...

Russia’s vaunted S-400 anti-air defence system, which it has offered to sell to Iraq. Source: National Interest Since the Iranian revolution of 1979, both Iran and Russia have had renewed interest in influencing politics in Iraq. Moscow is in favour of a secular and stable Iraq amenable to a Russian presence, whereas revolutionary Iran hopes for a Shi’a Iraq that favours neither East nor West. However, and despite these incompatible strategies, Iran and Russia have been cooperating in Iraq over the past few years. This cooperation was not a result of mutual interest, but rather of unexpected political events such as the US invasion of Iraq and the subsequent emergence of ISIS. Under these circumstances, Russia and Iran’s relations in Iraq have gone through different stages outlined bel...
