CRIME, iran, WORLD
Three men have been arrested in Iran on suspicion of trying to sell two babies on Instagram. Tehran's police chief, Brig-Gen Hossein Rahimi, said one of the children was 20 days old. The other was two months old. The babies had already been bought for up to $500 (£400), and were being resold for between $2,000 and $2,500. One of those arrested allegedly said he was "getting babies from poor families" and "handing them over to families who could provide a better future". Brig-Gen Rahimi told local media that police officers had been alerted to "ads on Instagram for selling babies". The officers uncovered "10 to 15 such pages" on the photo-sharing service and found the two babies with the three men who were arrested, he said. The babies were handed over to social services. ...

WORLD: ‘Under pressure’, Iran will never hold talks with US says President Rouhani

AMERICA, FEATURE STORIES, iran, WORLD
Iran will never hold talks with the United States under pressure, President Hassan Rouhani said on Sunday, adding that Tehran's help was essential in establishing security in the Middle East. Relations between Tehran and Washington reached crisis point in 2018 after US President Donald Trump abandoned a 2015 pact between Iran and world powers under which Tehran accepted curbs to its nuclear programme in return for the lifting of sanctions. Tensions spiked further following the killing of Iran's most prominent military commander Qassem Suleimani on January 3 by US drone attacks at Baghdad airport. In retaliation, Iran attacked US targets in Iraq in January. Mr Trump has adopted a policy of "maximum pressure" to force Tehran to negotiate a broader deal that further curbs I...

INTERNATIONAL: Iran Prepares Satellite Launch.

FEATURE STORIES, INTERNATIONAL, iran
Iran is again preparing to send a satellite into space after three failed attempts last year, in a move the United States claims will be used to advance its ballistic missile program. San Francisco’s Planet Labs Inc. released satellite images that show a hive of activity around a launch site at the Imam Khomeini Spaceport in Iran’s Semnan province, 145 miles from Tehran. The images appear to verify Iranian media reports that the nation is planning to launch satellites amid celebrations of the 41st anniversary of the Islamic Revolution on February 11, a time when Tehran often unveils new technological and military advancements. Following the release of the satellite images, Information and Communications Technology Minister Mohammed Javad Azari Jahromi confirmed on Monday...

None of the 135 passengers on board was hurt in the incident in the south-western city of Mahshahr. The Caspian Airlines flight departed from Tehran. Its wheels did not appear to be fully down for the landing. Images and footage of passengers exiting the aircraft were posted on social media. State TV quoted provincial aviation officials as saying the pilot "landed the aircraft too late and this caused him to miss the runway". A reporter who was on board the aircraft said that the back wheel of the McDonnell Douglas plane had broken off and that the plane skidded without its wheels. Civil aviation spokesman Reza Jafarzadeh told the semi-official Isna news agency that the plane skidded off the runway at 07:50 local time (04:20 GMT) on Monday. He added that an investig...

Iran nuclear deal, European powers trigger dispute mechanism

iran
European powers have triggered a dispute mechanism over the nuclear deal with Iran, after the country took a further step back from its commitments. Iran has suspended all limits on its production of enriched uranium, which can be used to make reactor fuel but also nuclear weapons. It has said it is responding to sanctions reinstated by the US when it withdrew from the accord in 2018. France, Germany and the UK said they did not accept Iran's argument. The nuclear deal saw Iran, which insists its nuclear programme is entirely peaceful, agree to limit its sensitive activities and allow in inspectors in return for the lifting of crippling economic sanctions. US President Donald Trump reinstated them to force Iran to negotiate a new agreement that would place indefini...

Ukrainian Boeing 737-800 crashes near Tehran, killing all 176 on board

INTERNATIONAL, iran, united states of america
A Ukrainian passenger jet carrying 176 people crashed Wednesday just minutes after taking off from the Iranian capital's main airport, killing all on board. It turned farmland on Tehran's outskirts into fields of flaming debris. The crash of the Ukraine International Airlines aircraft came hours after Iran launched a ballistic missile attack on Iraqi bases housing U.S. troops, but both Ukrainian and Iranian officials said they suspected a mechanical issue brought down the Boeing 737-800. The carrier said the plane was built in 2016 and "underwent its last planned technical maintenance" on Monday, Agence France Press reported. Airline officials said most of the passengers were en route to the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, transiting through there to other destinations. St...
