BEIJING/WASHINGTON/NEW YORK- China is withdrawing the press credentials of American journalists at three U.S. newspapers, intensifying a bitter fight between the world’s top two economies that has widened to include the coronavirus outbreak and media freedoms. Beijing announced on Wednesday what it said was retaliation against U.S. restrictions on Chinese journalists that includes revoking the accreditations of American correspondents with the New York Times, News Corp’s Wall Street Journal and Washington Post whose credentials expire by the end of 2020. The move is a sharp escalation of a dispute that saw Washington last month force Chinese state media firms to register as foreign embassies. WASHINGTON — For weeks, President Trump has minimized the coronavirus, mocked concern about it and treated the risk from it cavalierly. On Tuesday he took to the White House lectern and made a remarkable assertion: He knew it was a pandemic all along. “This is a pandemic,” Mr. Trump told reporters. “I felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic.” This is what Mr. Trump has actually said over the past two months: On Jan. 22, asked by a CNBC reporter whether there were “worries about a pandemic,” the president replied: “No, not at all. We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China, and we have it under control. It’s going to be just fine.” On Feb. 26, at a White House news conference, commenting on the country’s first reported cases: ...

AMERICA, CORONAVIRUS, ELECTIONS, INTERNATIONAL, INTERNATIONAL NEWS, Politics, united states of america, USA
Tuesday was supposed to be Super Tuesday, the sequel, with four big-state contests. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, Ohio - and its 136 delegates - has indefinitely delayed its in-person voting, even though many in the state have already cast early or absentee ballots. The primaries were held as scheduled in the other three states of Illinois, Florida and Arizona,. The latter two have robust early voting systems, which mean any drop in same-day balloting had less of an effect on total turnout. In Arizona, for instance, early voting exceeded the entire turnout in the state's 2016 Democratic primary - and the state was called for Biden just a few hours after polls closed there. Illinois, however, relies heavily on election-day turnout - and reports from the state indicate th...

Do not defraud tax payers over students in China

Business, EAST AFRICA, INTERNATIONAL, UGANDA, Ugandan Parliamanet
Legislators have warned the government to resist the temptation of using the plight of Ugandan students quarantined in Wuhan, China over Corona Virus, to defraud taxpayers. The concern was raised by Ayivu County MP, Bernard Atiku, who claimed that the Ministry of Finance had sent up to $600,000 to Uganda’s Embassy over and above the approved $61,000 meant for the Ugandan students stranded in the country. Atiku urged the August House to interest itself in reports from students in Wuhan that not all of them have been given money.  “Students are saying that not all have received the money and even the US$618 being given out to each student cannot match the rising costs of living in Wuhan,” said Atiku during the plenary sitting on Wednesday 11 March 2020. Members of Parliament have raised concerns over the increasing number of single mothers, who they said has been left to shoulder the child care burden single-handedly.  Legislators observed that government programmes on women empowerment have largely focused on addressing gender-based violence and to some extent personal incomes, but that the growing community of single mothers has hardly been explored. “There is a growing number of single parents worldwide and some countries have adopted a policy of either compelling men to do cost-sharing. They attach part of one’s salary or wages to ensure child support” said Hon Muhammad Nsereko (Ind., Kampala Central).
