Our Huawei MatePad Pro 12.6 video review is out – our first encounter with HarmonyOS 2.0

DIGITAL, ELECTRIC, SMART PHONES, TECHNOLOGY
Our written review of the Huawei MatePad Pro 12.6 (2021) went live a couple of days ago and in the meantime we finished our video review as well. You might want to watch this one even if you’re not in the marker for a new tablet because this is our first encounter with HarmonyOS 2.0. Huawei is forging its own path here, though as it turns out that path is paved on top of Android 10. And while EMUI is front and center, some features like the desktop mode have gone missing. Also, while Huawei provides alternatives to Google apps and services (e.g. Petal Search, Petal Maps, the AppGallery), some are not so easy to replace. For example, Google’s Widevine L1 DRM is supported, but US-based streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video do not recognize it, so you’re stuck with...

Infinix is working on a 160W fast-charging adapter

DIGITAL, ELECTRIC, SMART PHONES, TECHNOLOGY
Infinix is a Hong Kong-based smartphone company that focuses on developing markets like Nigeria, Egypt, and Indonesia. The manufacturer is know for delivering very solid specs for the price rather than groundbreaking industry innovations, but this might change. XDA-Developers shared a photo of an upcoming Infinix-branded 160W fast charger, intended for use in a future mobile phone. The adapter on the photo sure looks huge, as is to be expected for a brick this powerful. It's unclear when we'll see a phone ready to take advantage of it but it can't be long now. An alternative explanation might be that it's not meant for phones at all. Infinix has already started selling laptops with Windows and while those don't support these rates yet either one with a big graphics cards mig...

Computing, DIGITAL, ELECTRIC, SOFTWARE, TECHNOLOGY
Fastly, the company behind a major global internet outage this week, says the incident was caused by a bug in its software that was triggered when one of its customers changed their settings. Tuesday’s outage raised questions about the reliance of the internet on a few infrastructure companies. Fastly’s issue knocked out high traffic sites including news providers such as the Guardian and New York Times, as well as British government sites, Reddit and Amazon.com. “This outage was broad and severe and we’re truly sorry for the impact to our customers and everyone who relies on them,” the company said in a blog post authored by Nick Rockwell, its senior engineering and infrastructure executive. He said the problem should have been anticipated. Fastly operates a group of serv...

In China, a little-known EV maker is leaving Tesla in the dust

CARS, Computing, DIGITAL, ELECTRIC, TECHNOLOGY
A China-US JV has outsold every player with its tiny, cheap EV that young women love. Since last July, a little-known automaker in China’s southwest has dominated the world’s largest electric car market, outselling bigger players and even Tesla Inc. almost every month with a tiny, bare-bones EV that starts at just $4,500. The Hongguang Mini is the brainchild of SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Co., a joint venture between SAIC Motor Corp. and Guangxi Automobile Group Co., two state-backed automakers, and U.S. giant General Motors Co. Based in the city of Liuzhou, known for its limestone mountains and river-snail soup, the company — which has sold some 270,000 of the cars within nine months, making it the best-selling EV in China — has even bigger ambitions for the future. It’s aimin...

Colonial Pipeline ransom recovers as Bitcoin sinks

Computing, DIGITAL, ELECTRIC, TECHNOLOGY
The recovery of nearly all of the Bitcoin ransom paid to Colonial Pipeline hackers is undermining the perception that Bitcoin is beyond the control of any government. Bitcoin slumped to a two-week low, with analysts pointing to a technical breakdown as well as the recovery of Colonial Pipeline Co.’s ransom as evidence that crypto isn’t beyond government control. The largest token tumbled as much as 9.9% to $31,036 in New York trading. The wider Bloomberg Galaxy Crypto Index fell as much as 15%, with altcoins such as Ether, Litecoin and EOS dropping more. The fact that investigators “could trace the untraceable and seize it might be undermining the libertarian, free-of-government-control case,” said Jeffrey Halley, a senior market analyst at Oanda. The implications of that may...

How good is the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti for creatives?

We test out the RTX 3080 Ti using creative tools If you’ve read our full Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti review, you’ll have seen that it is an excellent graphics card when it comes to gaming, even rivaling the mighty RTX 3090. However, Nvidia is also keen to stress how good this new GPU is at creative tasks as well, so we decided to give it a spin, to see if it’s a GPU that’s worth buying for creatives. In the past, if you did creative work that required a graphics card, you’d often have to rely on professional GPUs, such as Nvidia’s Quadro range. These are extremely expensive, and for many people overkill. The good news is that as gaming GPUs have improved over the years, their abilities to handle creative tasks has also improved. In fact, Nvidia has done a sterling job in th...

WhatsApp is about to get a new feature that every user wants

Computing, DIGITAL, ELECTRIC, TECHNOLOGY
WhatsApp has had a terrible year so far, dominated by news detailing the new privacy policy update that forced users to agree to share more data with Facebook. That was the original plan for the terms of service change, but Facebook had to postpone the update by several months to deal with the massive backlash. Resistance from lawmakers then forced Facebook not to take any action against the people who did not agree to the terms of service. Initially, Facebook had planned to cripple the experience to the point where WhatsApp would be unusable. All the while, Facebook insisted that WhatsApp would not lose the end-to-end encryption that protects all chats and calls by default, but it never really explained why it needs that extra data from WhatsApp users. We know it’s for optional e-com...

The back of the Huawei P50 features two large circular camera bumps, one with three camera lenses and the second with a single lens and a flash. Mitsubishi Confirms That Ralliart Will Return In 2023

ELECTRIC, Motorsport, RACING, Sports, TECHNOLOGY
In its most recent annual financial report, Mitsubishi dropped a rather tantalising golden nugget of news in that it plans to revive its hallowed Ralliart brand as a means to further offer customers more “Mistubishi Motors-ness” with their vehicles. The long-dormant moniker, which was scaled back starting in 2010 (due to financial pressures), and put to rest – drawing an end to its storied involvement in motorsports – especially in the disciplines ofrallying and endurance off-roading events such as the Paris-Dakar. Though the Ralliart name continued to be around in some capacity to cap off limited-run models of the iconic Lancer Evolution X model until the mid-2010s – it was by then a shadow of its older self. How will Ralliart return? The plan now, however, is to revi...

Mitsubishi has been open about its intentions to have a high-performance future, and now we’ve been given our best look yet at what it could look like: the eagerly anticipated Lancer Evo XI. The unofficial renderings you see here come courtesy of automotive designer Enoch Gonzales, who has imagined what a Lancer Evo X1 could look like. Needless to say, it has shaped up a formidable foe for the all-conquering Subaru WRX STI. Of course, the preceding Lancer Evo X was discontinued in May 2016, bringing an end to the famous Evolution series after 10 generations. However, an 11th is currently in the works – if an Autocar report from June 2019 is to be believed. The UK publication claimed the supposed Lancer Evo XI would share its CMF-C/D platform with the next-generation Megane RS...
