Apple’s 24in iMac sold out almost everywhere

Computing, DIGITAL, ELECTRIC, TECHNOLOGY, USA
With long waits at Apple and other resellers listing the new M1 iMac as out of stock getting hold of a model is tricky, but not impossible. When Apple introduced the 24in iMac in seven different colours problems with delivery times were anticipated. It's therefore no surprise that Apple is predicting long delivery times for the new iMac. At the time of writing (14 June) it is impossible to pick up an iMac at an Apple Store and delivery times are currently around four weeks. Even longer if you wish to configure your new iMac with extra RAM or storage or if you want to choose certain colours (especially yellow, orange and purple it seems). With long waits at the Apple Store, which gets preferential treatment when it comes to supply of devices, it is no surprise that some resell...

Fast charging is ideal when you need to power up your iPhone or Android smartphone, and these days, with modern fast chargers, there’s no need to wait around. But what exactly is a fast charger? Bitcoin jumps after Musk says Tesla could use it again

Computing, DIGITAL, ELECTRIC, TECHNOLOGY
Bitcoin hit a two-week peak just shy of $40,000 on Monday, after another weekend reacting to tweets from Tesla boss Elon Musk, who fended off criticism over his market influence and said Tesla sold bitcoin but may resume transactions using it. Bitcoin has gyrated to Musk’s views for months since Tesla announced a $1.5 billion bitcoin purchase in February and said it would take the cryptocurrency in payment. He later said the electric car maker would not accept bitcoin due to concerns over how mining the currency requires high energy use and contributes to climate change. “When there’s confirmation of reasonable (~50%) clean energy usage by miners with positive future trend, Tesla will resume allowing Bitcoin transactions,” Musk said on Twitter on Sunday. Bitcoin rallied more ...

Our written review of the Huawei MatePad Pro 12.6 (2021) went live a couple of days ago and in the meantime we finished our video review as well. You might want to watch this one even if you’re not in the marker for a new tablet because this is our first encounter with HarmonyOS 2.0. Huawei is forging its own path here, though as it turns out that path is paved on top of Android 10. And while EMUI is front and center, some features like the desktop mode have gone missing. Also, while Huawei provides alternatives to Google apps and services (e.g. Petal Search, Petal Maps, the AppGallery), some are not so easy to replace. For example, Google’s Widevine L1 DRM is supported, but US-based streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video do not recognize it, so you’re stuck with...

Infinix is working on a 160W fast-charging adapter

DIGITAL, ELECTRIC, SMART PHONES, TECHNOLOGY
Infinix is a Hong Kong-based smartphone company that focuses on developing markets like Nigeria, Egypt, and Indonesia. The manufacturer is know for delivering very solid specs for the price rather than groundbreaking industry innovations, but this might change. XDA-Developers shared a photo of an upcoming Infinix-branded 160W fast charger, intended for use in a future mobile phone. The adapter on the photo sure looks huge, as is to be expected for a brick this powerful. It's unclear when we'll see a phone ready to take advantage of it but it can't be long now. An alternative explanation might be that it's not meant for phones at all. Infinix has already started selling laptops with Windows and while those don't support these rates yet either one with a big graphics cards mig...

Samsung unveils 50MP ISOCELL JN1 camera sensor

DIGITAL, SMART PHONES, TECHNOLOGY
Samsung has just introduced its latest camera sensor targeted at smartphones - it is called ISOCELL JN1 and packs 50MP resolution. The size of a single pixel is just 0.64 μm, which is the smallest the Korean company has ever produced, while the entire sensor is 1/2.76” type. The sensor is made for “every smartphone, from mid-range to flagship”. It has ISOCELL 2.0 for advanced pixel isolation and reducing cross-talk. In theory, it should improve light sensitivity and color fidelity with upgraded materials between color filters that don't let light from one pixel leak into the neighboring ones. The ISOCELL JN1 comes with Tetrapixel technology that bins four pixels into one big 1.28μm pixel for bright 12.5 MP images with less noise. This also enables real-time HDR - with two exposu...

In China, a little-known EV maker is leaving Tesla in the dust

A China-US JV has outsold every player with its tiny, cheap EV that young women love. Based in the city of Liuzhou, known for its limestone mountains and river-snail soup, the company — which has sold some 270,000 of the cars within nine months, making it the best-selling EV in China — has even bigger ambitions for the future.
