Human rights lawyer Nicholas Opiyo granted a 15 million cash bail while each of his sureties were given a sh100m non-cash bail.

The Anti-Corruption Division of the High Court has granted human rights lawyer Nicholas Opiyo bail. Opiyo appeared before Justice Jane Okuo Kajuga for his bail application hearing. Justice Kajuga granted Opiyo Shs15m cash bail. She rejected prosecution’s argument that Opiyo has no known place of abode, reminding the state attorney that police had made a search on the lawyer’s home. The judge further ruled that the nature of the charges cannot be used to take away Opiyo’s presumption of innocence until guilt has been proven. Days ago, Buganda Road Court had remanded Opiyo to Kitalya Prison until January 11. As you are aware, the Electoral Commission, received the first delivery of ballot papers and Declaration of Results Forms for District Woman Representative to Parliament, on Wednesday 9th December 2020. This has since been followed by the delivery of ballot papers and Declaration of Results (DR) Forms for other elective positions, namely, Presidential, Directly-elected Members of Parliament and Local Government Councils (Chairperson and Councillors in partial consignments.
