Nigeria Becomes First African Basketball Team To Beat U.S. Men’s National Team

Basketball, GAMES, Nigeria, Sports, USA
The start-studded all-NBA U.S. men’s basketball team roster was upset by Nigeria in their first exhibition match ahead of the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. Nigeria became the first African basketball team to defeat the stacked U.S. team, coming out victorious with the final score 90-87. Although the loss will unlikely affect the United State’s gold medal ambitions, the feat is more symbolic than ever. The loss saw Team USA‘s record drop to 54-3 in exhibition games, which it has held since 1992 when NBA players were first given the go ahead to play in the Olympics. The last time Team USA lost an exihibtion game was in 2019 against Australia at the FIBA World Cup. Nine years ago, Team USA beat Nigeria 156-73 at the 2012 London Olympics. It appears that the team has made its vengence in...

Basketball, GAMES, JAPAN, OLYMPICS, Sports, USA
When 3x3 basketball debuts at the Tokyo Olympics this summer, one heavyweight name will be missing after the United States men's team failed to qualify. At the 2021 FIBA 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament this week in Graz, Austria, Team USA topped its group despite losing to Belgium. But on Sunday in the quarterfinals, the Netherlands eliminated the U.S. from the tournament, where the top three teams will advance to Tokyo. Team USA was considered one of the Olympic favorites after winning the 2019 FIBA World Cup. The team was made up of former Purdue star and Timberwolves forward Robbie Hummel, No. 1 ranked U.S. 3x3 player and former NBA first-round draft pick Dominique Jones, former Princeton standout Kareem Maddox, NBA G League guard Canyon Berry, son of NBA Hall of Famer Rick...

Jayson Tatum’s 50-point night takes focus off Kyrie Irving’s return, lifts Boston Celtics in Game 3

Basketball, GAMES, Sports, USA
BOSTON, U.S.A -- Every one of the 4,789 fans who entered TD Garden on Friday night came ready to boo Kyrie Irving until their voices were hoarse. But after the Boston Celtics came away with a stunning 125-119 victory over the Brooklyn Nets in Game 3 of their first-round playoff series, those same fans were doing something very different when they left: chanting Jayson Tatum's name. Tatum scored 50 points for the second straight game in this building to go along with six rebounds and seven assists in 41 minutes. It was a spectacular performance that was enough to overcome his old teammate Irving, as well as Brooklyn's former MVPs, Kevin Durant and James Harden, to drag the Celtics back into this series. "It's just one of those nights," Tatum said. "Trying to protect home court, t...

Unites States of America LeBron James violated the NBA's health and safety protocols by attending a promotional event for Lobos 1707, a tequila brand that he backs, according to ESPN's Dave McMenamin. The event took place earlier this week, before the Lakers played against the Warriors in the play-in tournament. The league and the Lakers are aware of the situation.  "It's a violation of the agreed upon protocols, and, as we have in other comparable instances around the league, it has been addressed with the team," a league spokesman told ESPN on Friday. At this stage, no reporting has indicated that James will face discipline for the violation, and James played against the Warriors without incident. AFRICA, Basketball, EAST AFRICA, Rwanda, Sports
KIGALI, Rwanda Former NBA player Ben Uzoh became the first player to score in the newly-created Basketball Africa League (BAL) (theBAL.com), but the historic game belonged to host Patriots Basketball Club of Rwanda who defeated Nigeria’s Rivers Hoopers 83-60 on Sunday at Kigali Arena. Although the Hoopers had a promising start, they struggled to adjust to the Patriots’ aggressive defence. And turning the ball over 20 times didn’t help. Wilson Nshobozwabyosenumukiza, who came off the bench, and Prince Ibeh led the Patriots comeback, and the Nigerians couldn’t find any answers. And to make matters worse for the Hoopers, they got in foul trouble early in the second quarter, and things were never the same. Nshobozwabyosenumukiza, who established a record for most steals in a...
