NEW YORK, United States of America.
A UN judicial expert has said that the Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari did break international rules when he decided to suspend the country’s Chief Justice.
Buhari suspended Walter Onnoghen last month over allegations that the judge had failed to declare his assets.
But, the UN special rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, Diego Garcia-Sayan, said such a decision should be taken by an independent judicial council or a court.
According to Sayan, Buhari didn’t follow legal procedures and it was incompatible with the independence of the judiciary.
His decision has also drawn nation wide and international criticism.
