Protesters have shut down an interstate in Atlanta, the United State of America after a black man was shot dead by police.
Video footage accessed by CNN shows a man resisting to be arrested by two police officers. The man finally managed to get out of police hands and ran as the officers went after him and shot him dead.
The man identified as Rayshard Brooks, 27, had fired the taser toward the police officer chasing him before he was killed.
The incident occurred after police were called at a restaurant to restore order after the deceased had fallen asleep in his car blocking vehicles from driving through a lane.
Protesters took to the streets calling for action following Mr Brooks’ death closed down a major highway, Interstate-75, in Atlanta.
The incident led to the resignation of Atlanta’s police chief.
Atlanta’s Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms condemned the incident saying the video footage shows clearly that the officer was not justified to use a deadly force.
“Because of her desire that Atlanta is a model of what meaningful reform should look like across this country Chief Shields has offered to immediately step aside as Police Chief so that the city may move forward with urgency and rebuilding the trust so desperately needed throughout our communities,” said the Mayor in a statement.
The incident has awakened massive protests that are reminiscent of those that were witnessed after the death of George Floyd.
People in Atlanta were part of the chaotic protest that was demanding justice for Floyd and also an end to racial discrimination.
Floyd died on 25 May after a Minneapolis police officer kneeled on his neck for over eight minutes. The officer was arrested, sacked and charged with second-degree murder.
