URA Commissioner at Center of Shooting Investigation as Two Civilians Left Critically Injured in Mukono

A senior official in the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) is at the center of a serious criminal investigation following a Sunday night shooting that left two civilians critically injured in Mukono Town.

According to information obtained by this website, the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, at around 9:00 PM.

Godson Mwesigye, a Commissioner in URA’s enforcement unit, was reportedly traveling in a silver Toyota Fortuner (registration number UA 20241AA), accompanied by armed soldiers attached to enforcement operations.

Eyewitness accounts and preliminary findings indicate that Mwesigye ordered the occupants of a Toyota Vista (registration number UBP 571G) to be shot at.

The vehicle was allegedly sprayed with bullets, leaving its tyres flattened, and two occupants, identified as Denis Ebu and Joseph Tamale, were critically wounded.

The victims, both residents of Mutungo in Kampala, were rushed to Nsambya Hospital, where they remain in critical condition.

Security forces responded swiftly to the scene, leading to the arrest of several soldiers attached to the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF).

However, Mwesigye reportedly fled and remains at large.

Police have since opened a case of attempted murder under SD reference 66/26/04/2026.

In an apparent attempt to justify the shooting, Mwesigye is said to have told members of his enforcement team that the victims were suspected smugglers.

However, emerging evidence contradicts this claim.

Investigations suggest that Ebu and Tamale had traveled to Jinja for a weekend outing and were returning to Kampala at the time of the attack. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear.

Sources close to the investigation further allege that the URA official has been leveraging his position and influence to frustrate inquiries into the incident, raising concerns about accountability within enforcement agencies.

This publication continues to follow the developments closely as investigators work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.

No officials in the Uganda Police and URA are willing to speak about the matter when contacted.
