Kalangala Woman MP Helen Nakimuli has died following a surgical procedure at a private Kampala hospital, with her body transferred to Mulago National Referral Hospital for postmortem as investigations into the cause of death begin.

The body of Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament Helen Nakimuli has been transferred to Mulago National Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination following her death earlier on Saturday.

Nakimuli passed away at Alexandria Medical Centre along Yusuf Lule Road in Kampala, a private facility specialising in women’s health services.

Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament (MP) Hellen Nakimuli has died following an unsuccessful surgery, according to the opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Oon sunday.

“Terrible, shocking news! Hon. Hellen Nakimuli, Woman MP, Kalangala District just passed on after an unsuccessful surgery! May God strengthen all of us in this very tough time,” Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, wrote on X at around 5:27pm.

Ssenyonyi Says MP Nakimuli Drove Herself to Hospital for Ill-Fated Surgery

Opposition MPs are in shock after Kalangala Woman MP Hellen Nakimuli died during surgery, with Opposition Leader Joel Ssenyonyi revealing she personally drove herself to hospital earlier in the day for what she believed was a minor procedure.

The Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, has said Kalangala District Woman MP Helen Nakimuli drove herself to hospital on Saturday morning before undergoing a surgical procedure from which she did not survive.

Ms Nakimuli, who died at Alexandria Medical Centre in Kampala, reportedly went in for a minor surgery but could not leave the table alive.

Details surrounding the surgery and the exact cause of death were not immediately available, but reports indicate that died at Mulago Hospital.

Nakimuli was among legislators expected to take oath of Uganda’s 12th Parliament, scheduled for May 13–15, 2026, at Parliament House in Kampala as the new parliamentary term begins.

One of her last major public appearances was on April 13 at a church event in Kampala marking the 71st birthday of Buganda’s king. Speaking at the event, she appealed to religious leaders to speak out against human rights violations.

David Lewis Rubongoya, the NUP Secretary General said he and other party members got the news of her passing at around 4pm on Sunday. He said

“We rushed to Alexandria Medical Center located along Yusuf Lule Road and confirmed indeed that she had passed away,” he said

“The doctors told us that she was undergoing surgery which was done and completed but she did not wake up from it. They tried their best to resuscitate her but all in vain.”

By press time, her family had not released further details regarding the cause of death or funeral arrangements.
