Ugandans have in recent days witnessed a surge in hate speech and propaganda following the entry of new contenders into the Speakership race. What should be a contest of ideas and leadership credentials is unfortunately being reduced to rumor, character attacks, and politically motivated misinformation.
Yesterday, I came across claims alleging that Rt. Hon. Anita Among had a bitter exchange with H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni over the Speakership. However, information from reliable sources within State House indicates that the matter has not been part of any recent official meetings since the CEC position that maintained the status quo. Such reports therefore appear intended to inflame tensions rather than inform the public.
This wave of propaganda risks sowing unnecessary divisions within the National Resistance Movement, a party that emerged from the January general elections united and strong, thanks to the leadership of H.E. the President, Rt. Hon. Anita Among, the Secretary General Richard Todwong, and the many cadres who worked tirelessly to secure victory.
My appeal to all aspirants, both within the NRM and across the political divide, is to campaign with decorum and restraint. Personal attacks may generate social media attention, but they do little to win the confidence of Members of Parliament, who are the constitutionally mandated electors of the Speaker. The Speaker serves all Ugandans and must therefore rise above sectarian and personal battles.
The real contest should be about policy, competence, and the ability to preside over Parliament with fairness not about trading insults in the public arena.
