President Yoweri Museveni has taken his wealth creation message to Kigezi, launching the Western Uganda stretch of his 2026 campaign with a call for unity and a renewed push for household income growth.

Speaking to crowds at Saaza Grounds in Kisoro District on Monday, the NRM national chairman said Uganda’s next milestone depends on raising incomes at the family level. He noted that while peace and infrastructure remain major achievements of the NRM government, the country now needs a shift toward productivity if it is to reach high middle income status.

Museveni pointed to commercial agriculture as the fastest path out of poverty. He highlighted farmers such as George Matongo of Ngoma, Nakaseke, who produces 900 litres of milk daily, and Joseph Basangwa of Kamuli, who earns about Shs 20 million a day from poultry. He urged rural households to adopt his four acre model, which encourages a mix of coffee, fruits, dairy, poultry, piggery, and fish farming.

“We have tarmac up to Bunagana and Cyanika, but people do not sleep on the road,” he said. “The focus now is wealth creation for every home.

The President also listed the NRM’s core contributions, beginning with peace, and thanked residents for supporting efforts to stabilise the border region. On infrastructure, he cited ongoing upgrades to the Kabale–Kisoro–Mgahinga road and the planned work on the Kisoro–Muko–Rukiri–Katoojo route. He said education in the district has grown, with 136 government primary schools and 14 government secondary schools under USE and UPOLET, but noted gaps in coverage across several parishes and sub counties.

A strong team of senior NRM leaders joined him in Kisoro and asked residents to back the party in 2026. Speaker of Parliament Anita Among said voters would reward the NRM for peace and development, while Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa described the decision to start the Western trail in Kisoro as a sign of appreciation to the region. NRM Western region vice chairperson Asiimwe Jonard reaffirmed the area’s support for the party.

The rally drew high profile figures, including NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong, cabinet ministers, MPs, and prominent Kisoro leaders such as Gen Kale Kayihura and King Ceasor Mulenga.
