KANUNGU — The Electoral Commission has officially nominated Esther Majambere Musoke as the District Woman Representative for Kanungu, marking her entry into the 2026 parliamentary race. The announcement was made by Mukundane David, the Electoral Commission Returning Officer for Kanungu District, during a nomination exercise held at 10:00 a.m. in Kanungu.

In her remarks following the nomination, Majambere expressed gratitude to her supporters and outlined her vision for the people of Kanungu. She revealed that her symbol is the “radio,” explaining that it signifies her commitment to being a voice for the voiceless, particularly the underprivileged communities who often struggle to access government programs and services.

“My symbol is the radio because I want to be the voice of the people of Kanungu, especially the low-income earners, so that they too can benefit from government initiatives,” Majambere stated.

Kanungu District, located in southwestern Uganda, has a population of approximately 280,000 people, with over 52% being women according to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) 2024 mid-year estimates. The district’s economy is largely dependent on agriculture, with tea, coffee, and bananas as the main cash crops. However, access to education, healthcare, and infrastructure remains limited in several rural sub-counties, an issue Majambere has pledged to prioritize if elected.

The nomination period, which officially began this week, is part of the Electoral Commission’s 2026 general election roadmap, covering parliamentary and local government elections across all districts. The EC’s Returning Officer, Mukundane David, emphasized the importance of peaceful campaigns and adherence to electoral guidelines throughout the nomination and campaign period.

Majambere’s nomination adds to the growing list of women seeking to represent their districts in the 12th Parliament, reflecting a rising trend of female political participation in Uganda. According to EC statistics, the 2021 general elections saw 180 women nominated for district woman representative positions, a number expected to rise in the upcoming 2026 polls.

As campaigns begin to take shape, Majambere pledges  to focus on women empowerment, education, youth employment, and equitable access to public resources, saying she hopes to amplify the voices of those often left unheard in policy-making spaces.
