UPDATE: Uganda is hosting the 19th NAM Midterm Ministerial Meeting in Kampala, reviewing last year’s summit outcomes and strengthening cooperation for the Global South.

KAMPALA, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) — Senior officials from member states of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on Monday began a meeting in Kampala ahead of a foreign ministers’ conference to address challenges facing the movement amid rising geopolitical tensions.

“As Chair of the Non-Aligned Movement Coordinating Bureau, Uganda remains steadfast in upholding the Movement’s principled positions and in promoting the collective interests of our Member States on the global stage. We are fully committed to revitalizing NAM, reinforcing its unity and solidarity, and ensuring that our voice continues to influence international dialogue and decision-making,” Odongo told delegates at Speke Resort Munyonyo today.

Ugandan Foreign Minister Jeje Odongo, who opened the NAM Midterm Ministerial Review Meeting held under the theme “Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence,” called for collective effort and renewed commitment among member states.

“It is only through unity, solidarity and a common purpose that we can project a clear, strong, and coordinated voice on the issues that affect our nations in today’s increasingly complex and volatile global environment,” Odongo said. “This environment continues to hinder our aspirations for economic development, social progress, peace, and the full enjoyment of human rights and the rule of law.”

Odongo urged NAM members to uphold the movement’s long-standing position on the question of Palestine and to strengthen South-South cooperation to overcome persistent barriers to fair global markets.

The officials’ meeting precedes the foreign ministers’ conference scheduled for Wednesday, which will review progress on the implementation of outcomes from the 19th summit held in Kampala in January last year.

The Non-Aligned Movement, comprising 121 member states, is guided by the Bandung Principles, including respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, equality among nations, and non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries.

Overview of the Meeting

The NAM Midterm Ministerial Review Meeting is taking place from October 13 to 16, 2025, at the Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala, Uganda. This high-level gathering follows Uganda’s successful hosting of the 19th NAM Summit in January 2024. The meeting is themed “Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence,” and it aims to bring together Foreign Affairs Ministers from NAM member states, observer countries, and international organizations to discuss key global issues.

Key Agenda Items

  1. Geopolitical Tensions: The meeting will address the relevance of NAM in the context of rising geopolitical tensions and the need for collective action to safeguard peace, security, and human rights.

    2
  2. Palestine Question: A significant focus will be on the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with discussions expected to center around the full implementation of UN General Assembly Resolution ES-10/27, which calls for an end to the blockade of Gaza and the facilitation of humanitarian assistance.

    2
  3. Global Governance Reform: Delegates will discuss the need for reforms in global governance structures, including the UN Security Council, to ensure fair representation for developing nations.

    2
  4. Sustainable Development Goals: The meeting will emphasize the importance of revitalizing global partnerships for sustainable development, particularly in line with the UN 2030 Agenda and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda
  5. Uganda’s Role

Uganda’s hosting of this meeting underscores its commitment to championing multilateralism and cooperation among developing nations. The government has assured that all logistical and security arrangements are in place to facilitate a successful conference, reflecting Uganda’s growing role on the global diplomatic stage.

This meeting serves as a critical platform for NAM member states to reassess their strategies and commitments in light of current global challenges, reinforcing the movement’s longstanding positions on peace, justice, and international cooperation.
