Kampala, The Electoral Commission (EC) has commenced the process of notifying presidential aspirants about the status of their submitted supporter lists in line with the provisions of the Presidential Elections Act, 2005.

According to EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi, as of Friday, 19th September 2025, the Commission had notified 27 out of 38 aspirants who have so far returned their lists to support their presidential bids. Out of these, only two aspirants have so far met the required supporter numbers, while the remaining candidates are at various stages of compliance.

Mr. Mucunguzi noted that the Commission is still conducting verification of the remaining submissions and will update the respective aspirants in due course.

The notification exercise is guided by Section 10 of the Presidential Elections Act, which requires every presidential candidate to attach to their nomination papers a list of registered voters supporting their bid.

  • Section 10 (1b) stipulates that a nomination must be supported by not less than 100 voters in at least two-thirds of all districts in Uganda. With Uganda’s 146 districts, this translates to a minimum of 9,800 supporters drawn from at least 98 districts.
  • Section 10 (3) requires each supporter to provide their name, signature, physical address, and voter registration number.
  • Section 10 (4) prohibits a person from supporting more than one candidate, while Section 10 (5) provides penalties for contravention, including a fine of up to UGX 480,000, imprisonment for up to one year, or both.

The Commission emphasized that the verification of supporter lists is a rigorous and elaborate process intended to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process. The checks ensure compliance with legal provisions, prevent duplication of support, and authenticate voter details.

“The Commission remains committed to ensuring that the nomination exercise of presidential candidates, and indeed all elective positions, is conducted in full compliance with the relevant electoral laws,” Mr. Mucunguzi said.

The EC reminded aspirants that nominations for presidential candidates will take place on 23rd and 24th September 2025 at the Commission’s headquarters in Lweza-Lubowa, Makindye Ssabagabo Municipality.

With the verification process underway, the Commission urged aspirants to remain patient and comply with the legal requirements as the country inches closer to the 2026 General Elections.
