The Electoral Commission (EC) has begun receiving a fleet of brand-new vehicles, including Toyota Land Cruisers and double-cabin pickups, ahead of Uganda’s 2026 general elections.

According to EC officials, the vehicles are intended to support security operations during the campaign period. The double-cabin pickups will be assigned to the security details of officially nominated presidential candidates, while the Land Cruisers are designated for Electoral Commission staff.

“These vehicles are not for the candidates themselves. The pickups are for their security teams, while the Land Cruisers are strictly for Commission use,” clarified EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi.

The EC has set September 23 and 24, 2025, as the official nomination dates for presidential aspirants a key milestone in Uganda’s electoral calendar.

To qualify, aspirants must be Ugandan by birth, registered voters, and possess at least an Advanced Level (A-level) of education. Independent candidates are additionally required to gather at least 100 signatures from registered voters in two-thirds of Uganda’s districts.

The nomination process officially opened on August 11, 2025, when candidates began collecting nomination forms from the EC headquarters in Kampala.

Following the nomination, the official campaign period will run from October 4, 2025, to January 12, 2026. General elections   covering presidential, parliamentary, and local government races   are scheduled to take place between January 12 and February 9, 2026.

The provision of official vehicles to candidates’ security details has been standard practice in previous elections, aimed at promoting fairness and ensuring safety during campaign activities.

As the 2026 elections are expected to be among the most hotly contested in Uganda’s history, the arrival of the vehicle fleet highlights the EC’s efforts to maintain a secure and well-organized electoral process.
