Kampala, Uganda: A fresh storm has erupted in Uganda’s music industry, pinning singer Edirisa Musuuza, popular as Eddy Kenzo, president of the Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF), for unfairly distributing government funds meant to support artists.

Rising star Omukenkufu ShamanUG alleges that while the government allocated UGX 13 billion as a stimulus package for the sector, with over UGX 8 billion disbursed to the UNMF, many musicians have been left out.

“The money that government gives Eddy Kenzo is for eating, but us musicians get nothing,” Shaman said, sparking outrage and raising fresh concerns about transparency in the federation.

Divisions in the industry

When reached out, Eddy Kenzo confirmed that the UNMF received government support but declined to disclose the exact figures, citing confidentiality. Even some artists, including Ziza Bafana and Nina Roz, have acknowledged receiving support, but others maintain they have been excluded.

The accusations have, however, exposed sharp divisions among artists. Kalifah AgaNaga has defended Kenzo, arguing that critics are driven by jealousy and a desire to undermine his leadership. On the other hand, King Saha has thrown his weight behind Shaman Ug, saying Uganda’s music sector still lacks meaningful copyright enforcement.

Adding fuel to the fire, media mogul Nyanzi announced plans to raise airplay fees once the copyright law is amended, intensifying debates over royalties and music distribution.

Spotlight on new talent

Despite the controversy, Shaman Ug has been riding high after the release of his latest track, Kiba Kidongo. Industry watchers say the dispute may either catapult his influence in pushing for reform or isolate him from Kenzo’s loyal camp of musicians.

As the battle lines are drawn, all eyes are on Eddy Kenzo and UNMF leadership to see whether they can restore confidence in the system and ensure the multi-billion stimulus reaches its intended beneficiaries.
