Elon Musk said on Saturday he has founded a new political party in the United States, named the America Party. He announced the move on social media platform X, which he owns.
The statement lacked specific details on the party’s platform or plans but signalled Musk’s growing ambition to influence US politics. He indicated the party aims to challenge both Republicans and Democrats in key districts, potentially securing a swing vote position in Congress.
Until recently, Musk served as head of the federal Office of Efficiency in Government, known informally as Doge, under the White House. His relations with President Donald Trump ended in June following public criticism of Trump’s latest legislative package.
The so-called “big beautiful law,” signed by Trump on Friday, significantly increases the national debt and reduces taxes for high-income earners and corporations. Musk opposed the bill, describing it as fiscally reckless.
The US political system is dominated by the Democratic and Republican parties, but smaller parties such as the Greens and Libertarians operate nationally. Whether Musk’s America Party will gain traction remains unclear.
No formal steps for registering the party or running candidates have been announced. According to Musk, the party’s goal is not to replace existing parties but to influence the balance of power in Congress.
