The plane landed at Mumbai airport after seven persons on board fell ill due to the mid-air cabin depressurisation.

New Delhi: In a continuous trail of incidents related to mid-air crises, an Ethiopian Airlines Dreamliner was forced to make an emergency landing at the Chhattrapati Shivaji Maharaj International airport at 1:32 am on June 27. As per media reports, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft underwent a mid-air cabin depressurisation due to which seven persons on board fell ill.

“On landing, seven persons were attended to by the airport medical team for decompression-related symptoms, out of which one person required hospitalisation,” The Times of India reported quoting a source.

“The incident comes days after 11 flyers, including six crew members, felt dizzy and nauseous during an Air India Heathrow-Mumbai flight operated with a Boeing 777 aircraft on June 23,” the report underlined, adding that “the cause for the illness is under probe” by the DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation).

Quoting data from Flightradar24, the news report said the Ethiopian Airliner was cruising at 33,000 feet when the cabin depressurisation happened and “the pilots executed a rapid descent to a lower altitude…”

The flight, ET640, was then flying over the Arabian Sea.

News reports have underlined that cabin depressurisation is a rare phenomenon in commercial aviation. “Aircraft cabins are sealed and pressurised with conditioned air and oxygen to allow safe travel at high altitudes where atmospheric oxygen is low. On rare occasions, the pressurisation system can fail.”

The Telegraph cited under what circumstances would the pressurisation system fail — “because of structural failures, system malfunctions, accidental crew actions, or deliberate decisions by the flight crew.”

“In some cases, crew members may unintentionally activate or mismanage pressurisation controls. Rarely, a lot might intentionally depressurise the cabin, for instance, to dispose smoke in an emergency”.

OnS June 12, in a worst air disaster in recent history, a London-bound Boeing 787 Dreamliner had crashed just minutes after taking off from the Ahmedabad airport killing at least 270 people.
