Five killed in head-on crash on Kampala-Gulu Highway hotspot.

Five people were killed and six others injured in a head-on collision involving two vehicles on the Kampala-Gulu Highway on Sunday night, authorities confirmed.

The crash occurred at Kyalweza village in Nakasongola District. According to Mr Sam Twineamazima, spokesperson for the Savannah Region Police, the incident involved a Toyota Hiace, registration number UA 415V, and a Nissan vehicle, registration number UBL 615T.

“It is alleged that motor vehicle Reg. No. UA 415V, driven by an unidentified driver and moving in the direction of Gulu City, crossed his lane while at high speed, colliding with motor vehicle Reg. No. UBL 615T which was driving in the direction of Kampala City from Gulu City,” Mr Twineamazima said.

All five fatalities occurred on the spot, while the six survivors were taken to Kiryandongo Hospital in Kiryandongo District and Nakasongola Health Centre IV for medical attention. The bodies of the deceased were transported to Nakasongola Health Centre IV for postmortem.

The Kyalweza section of the highway is part of a notoriously dangerous stretch between Luweero Town and Migyera in Nakasongola District, marked by several known road crash blackspots.

These include Bujaabe, Kyamukonwa, Namayonjo, Katuugo, Kapaburuli, Nalongo and Kakooge.

At least 11 people have died in crashes along this corridor between May and June 2025, according to police records in the Savannah region.

The Uganda Police’s annual traffic report released in February 2025 showed an increase in nationwide road crashes in 2024. A total of 25,107 road crashes were recorded, up from 23,876 in 2023, representing a 6.4% increase.

Of these, 4,434 were fatal, and 13,134 were classified as serious. Total road crash casualties reached 25,808 in 2024, with 5,144 deaths—an increase from 4,806 deaths in 2023.

Mr Twineamazima said investigations into Sunday’s crash are ongoing, and urged drivers to avoid speeding and dangerous overtaking.
