Monsignor Expedito Magembe, the long-serving head of Mt. Sion Prayer Centre in Bukalango, has died. He passed away on Friday, May 9, 2025, after battling an illness reportedly linked to poisoning.
“On behalf of His Grace Paul Ssemogerere, Archbishop of Kampala, with profound sorrow, we announce the passing of Monsignor Expedito Magembe of Mt. Sion, Bukalango, who departed from this life on May 9, 2025. Burial arrangements will be communicated in due course. We kindly request your prayers for the repose of his soul,” said Fr. Pius Male Ssentumbwe, the Chancellor of the Kampala Archdiocese.
Ordained more than 50 years ago, Msgr. Magembe dedicated his life to spiritual guidance and uplifting communities. He became a beloved figure in the Catholic Church for his powerful teachings on prayer, forgiveness, and love, consistently emphasizing hard work, humility, and generosity. His sermons drew heavily from scripture, inspiring believers to live faithfully and compassionately.
In 2001, he established the Mount Sion Prayer Centre in Bukalango, Wakiso District, which quickly grew into a spiritual refuge for thousands seeking healing and counseling. The centre hosts regular healing Masses every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, attracting pilgrims from across the country. Monthly overnight prayer gatherings, known as “Ssangalo,” further deepened its reputation as a vibrant center of Catholic faith.
Beyond his ministry, Msgr. Magembe was a prolific composer of sacred music, credited with writing nearly 1,000 Catholic hymns. His music has had a lasting impact on liturgical worship in Uganda. In recognition of his contributions, the Cherubim Chamber Chorale held a special concert in his honor at the Uganda National Cultural Centre to mark his golden jubilee in priesthood.
In 2013, Pope Benedict XVI bestowed on him the title of Monsignor, in acknowledgment of his exceptional service to the Church. The title was officially conferred during a ceremony at Rubaga Cathedral, led by the late Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga.
Msgr. Magembe’s legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched with his preaching, music, and acts of charity. Funeral details will be released by the Archdiocese of Kampala in the coming days.
