Buikwe,Uganda:Traffic police are reporting that several people have been killed in a bus crash in Buikwe District. The bus, which was coming from Katosi to Jinja, crashed and overturned before catching fire. Traffic Police Spokesperson Michael Kananura explains what happened.
Dozens of people have been confirmed dead and several others injured after a passenger bus belonging to YY Coaches overturned and caught fire on Monday evening at Makindu Village along the Kisoga–Nyenga Road in Buikwe District.
Several people are feared dead after a YY Coaches bus, registration number UAV 701C overturned and caught fire near Makindu Trading Centre in Buikwe District on Monday evening.
According to Traffic police spokesperson, Michael Kananura, the tragic incident occurred at approximately 5:00 PM in Makindu Village, along the Kisoga–Nyenga Road in Buikwe District.
“The crash involved a Scania motor vehicle, registration number UAV 701C, belonging to YY Company,” Kananura said in a brief statement on Monday evening.
The incident occured after the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and overturn before bursting into flames.
“The vehicle was traveling from Katosi to Jinja when the driver lost control at Makindu Village. It overturned and caught fire, resulting in the loss of lives, who are yet to be identified, and injuries to multiple passengers who have been rushed to Kawolo Hospital, St. Francis Lwanga Hospital in Buikwe, and other nearby health facilities, where they are currently receiving medical attention,” Kananura said.
He added that Police and emergency services rushed to the scene to extinguish the fire and retrieve the bodies of those who perished in the crash.
The incident adds on the rising toll of accidents that occur on Ugandan roads daily.
Uganda is grappling with a concerning rise in road accidents, with recent incidents underscoring the severity of the situation.
