Eid-Ul-Fitr 2025: Exact date of Eid is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon.

Eid-Ul-Fitr 2025: This year, Eid is most likely to be celebrated on March 30 (Sunday) or March 31 (Monday), depending on the sighting of the moon in different parts of the world.

What is Eid al-Fitr?

Eid al-Fitr is known as the festival of the breaking of the fast as it comes right after the Holy Month of Ramadan.

For the whole month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, abstaining from food and drink.

The month is also about reflection and doing good deeds.

Eid al-Fitr traditions can vary depending on where adherents are from, especially when it comes to what is eaten.

Families and friends often come together for morning prayers and food.

Eid al-Fitr usually lasts three days but in some countries and cultures it can  be extended for an entire month.

In many countries with large Muslim populations it is a public holiday.

Before morning prayers, Muslims are also obligated to pay Zakat al-Fitr, which is a small donation given to the poor or those in need.

The mandatory donation often equals the cost of one meal or 1 kilogram of rice and wheat, so this differs between countries and regions.

That money goes to the poor and needy, including widows, orphans, refugees and people experiencing homelessness.

Those who have missed fasts during Ramadan and are unable to make up for them afterwards due to health reasons, will also have to pay “Fidya”.

Each day a fast is missed will cost a meal’s worth to donate.

Muslims usually wear nice clothes and open their homes, which are often decorated to visits from families and friends.

Why do the dates for each change?

Eid al-Fitr begins at the start of the Islamic month of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic calendar.

The method by which the Grand Mufti of Australia and the Australian Fatwa Council determined the end of the month of Ramadan, the first day of Shawwal, and the day of Eid Al-Fitr is based on the calculated birth of the moon before sunset, the duration of the moonset after sunset, and the possibility of sighting the moon.

This is a method that has been adopted by many prominent and reputable global scholarly councils, Grand Mufti of Australia Dr Ibrahim Abu Mohamad says.

Isn’t there another Eid?

Yes, there are two.

Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.

Eid al-Adha happens on the last month of the lunar calendar and follows the completion of the annual Holy Pilgrimage of Hajj.

It’s also known as the “festival of sacrifice”, because it involves the slaughtering of livestock.

The meat is then to be shared equally with neighbours, families and the less fortunate.
