President Museveni commends progress on Hoima City Stadium ahead of AFCON 2027

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has lauded the ongoing construction of Hoima City Stadium, reaffirming the government’s commitment to developing sports infrastructure in preparation for AFCON 2027.

During an inspection visit to Hoima City on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, President Museveni, accompanied by First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Maama Janet Museveni, emphasized the importance of investing in modern sports facilities to boost Uganda’s international profile.

“Apart from Namboole and Nakivubo, Uganda has not done much in terms of stadium development, but the tide is turning. With Uganda co-hosting AFCON 2027, we are prioritizing the development of sports infrastructure, tourism, and hospitality,” Museveni stated.

He pledged government support to stimulate private sector investment, especially in hotel expansion in Hoima City, to accommodate the influx of visitors expected during the tournament.

In addition to Hoima City Stadium, President Museveni announced plans to Upgrade Akii-Bua Stadium in Lira and Transform Gulu Airport into an international facility to boost regional connectivity.

He also praised SUMMA, the Turkish construction firm handling the project, for their efficiency and quality workmanship, acknowledging the rapid progress made in just seven months since construction began in September 2024.

Vice President H.E Jessica Alupo highlighted the significance of sports in enhancing Uganda’s international reputation. She noted that modern stadiums will Provide better training facilities for athletes and Increase Uganda’s competitiveness on the global stage.

Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja described the Hoima Stadium project as a game-changer for the region, emphasizing its role in Youth development programs to nurture talent and Job creation and economic growth in the Bunyoro sub-region.

“This project has already generated employment and business opportunities for the people of Hoima,” Nabbanja remarked while applauding SUMMA for their professionalism.

Maama Janet Museveni expressed her satisfaction with the project’s progress and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring a successful AFCON 2027.

“I want to thank Hon. Peter Ogwang and the local leadership for monitoring the project closely and ensuring continuous feedback for government intervention where necessary,” she said.

She revealed that an Inter-Ministerial Forum had been established to coordinate efforts across various ministries to successfully deliver both CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027.

Maama Janet also acknowledged the late Dr. James Rujumba for donating 10 acres of land and FUFA for an additional 10 acres, which, combined with 22 acres acquired by the government, formed the 42-acre stadium complex.

“I also commend SUMMA for providing jobs to Ugandans, with 80% of the workforce being local citizens,” she added.

Murat Altun, SUMMA’s Project Manager, reassured stakeholders of the company’s dedication to completing the stadium within the agreed timeframe.

He credited President Museveni and Maama Janet for their leadership and support, which he said had been instrumental in the project’s smooth progress.

Hoima City Mayor, Mr. Brian Kaboyo, expressed gratitude to the President and First Lady for prioritizing the Bunyoro sub-region in Uganda’s infrastructure development agenda.

“Projects like the Kabalega International Airport, improved road networks, and now Hoima City Stadium are transformative and will leave a lasting legacy in our region,” Kaboyo said.

With the construction of Hoima City Stadium steadily progressing, the government is optimistic it will be completed on time for AFCON 2027.

The facility is expected to Set a new benchmark for sports infrastructure, Enhance youth talent development and Boost tourism and hospitality.

As Uganda prepares to co-host AFCON 2027 alongside Kenya and Tanzania, Hoima City Stadium stands as a symbol of the nation’s commitment to regional leadership in sports and development.
