Former Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga has dismissed claims by some opposition figures that the push for electoral reforms is a futile effort.
In a bold statement, Mathias Mpuuga challenged critics who argue that President Yoweri Museveni and his government would never allow meaningful reforms, questioning how the same Museveni, who allegedly resists reforms, has been declaring opposition candidates as winners in elections.
“I have heard strangely, some leaders from the opposition claiming that the quest for electoral reforms is late and that Gen Museveni and his parliament will not allow them. And here is the question: how is a Museveni who doesn’t want reforms then declare you as winner?” Mpuuga stated.
His remarks appeared to be directed at National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, and other opposition members who have dismissed electoral reforms as a waste of time.
Mathias Mpuuga suggested that rather than complaining, opposition figures should engage in substantive discussions to ensure the reforms address Uganda’s electoral challenges.
Mathias Mpuuga’s statement has sparked debate, with some interpreting it as an endorsement of Museveni’s governance, while others see it as a realistic approach to Uganda’s political landscape.
His comments also highlight deepening divisions within the opposition, especially following his fallout with Bobi Wine over parliamentary leadership and the controversial Shs 500 million service award.

While Museveni’s critics maintain that Uganda’s elections remain flawed, Mathias Mpuuga appears to suggest that opposition victories in certain constituencies prove that change is possible within the existing system.
