Bukono Stun Buzaaya as Butembe Edge Bugabula to Set Up Final Showdown
The MTN Busoga Masaza Cup semifinals delivered thrilling action and shocking outcomes as Bukono and Butembe secured their spots in the final of this year’s tournament, set to take place on December 15 at Bugembe Stadium.
Bukono’s Fairytale Journey Continues
The first semifinal saw Bukono, the underdogs of the tournament, stage a dramatic comeback to defeat Buzaaya 4-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time. The lunchtime downpour set a slippery stage for the match, but it was Buzaaya who struck first. Faizo Kakooza’s speculative 30-yard drive slipped through Bukono goalkeeper’s hands in the 7th minute, giving Buzaaya a deserved lead after a dominant first half.
Bukono turned the tide in the second half, switching to a wing-play strategy that piled pressure on Buzaaya’s defense. Their persistence paid off in the 77th minute when Moses Ocoman capitalized on a defensive error to level the game with a precise shot.
With the scores tied, the game was decided by penalties. Bukono were clinical, converting all their spot-kicks through Corcas Kaizi, Joel Matua, Abraham Alyong, and Richard Owori. In contrast, Buzaaya faltered under the pressure, with only captain Isa Balaba finding the net as teammates Owen Mawejje and Faizo Kakooza missed their attempts.
Bukono coach Amos Amodoi praised his team’s resilience, saying, “Our never-say-die attitude gave us belief. Today we had one hand on the trophy, and we’re ready to challenge for it on December 15.”
Buzaaya’s coach, Afan Ikoba, lamented his team’s inability to defend their lead. “We failed to endure and defend what we had. Today was simply Bukono’s day, but we’ll come back stronger,” he said.
Butembe Edge Bugabula in Tight ContestIn the second semifinal, Butembe overcame Bugabula 1-0 in a match overshadowed by off-field controversies. Ibrahim Madoi’s 77th-minute header from Peterson Mudulu’s pinpoint cross proved to be the decisive moment, sending Butembe to their second consecutive final.

However, Bugabula coach Ronald Lukungu claimed his team’s performance was hampered by a halftime incident involving security personnel. “We suffered a psychological setback after being denied access to the dressing room. It affected my players’ mental strength, and I couldn’t talk to them,” said a visibly upset Lukungu.
Butembe coach Bosco Bukenya commended his team’s determination despite challenging conditions. “The game was tough, but I told my players to stay focused, and they delivered. Now that we’re in the final, nothing will stop us from winning,” he declared.

The tournament excitement continues with the third-place playoff, a Kamuli derby between Bugabula and Buzaaya, set for November 30 at 3 PM.
