Town defender joins Jan Bednarek in achieving ignominious treble in defeat at Brentford

Own goal, penalty, red card: Ipswich’s Clarke has day to forget.

Ipswich Town defender Harry Clarke put himself in the history books of the Premier League in the match at Brentford on Saturday, but not in the way he would have dreamed about.

Clarke, 23, had a nightmare day at the Gtech Community Stadium, conceding an own goal, a penalty and then getting himself sent off.

In doing so, the former Arsenal player became only the second Premier League player to complete this unwanted treble.

The first was Southampton defender Jan Bednarek when Southampton lost 9-0 to Manchester United in February 2021.

But unlike Southampton, Ipswich seemed to be able to shake off Clarke’s ill-fortune. After taking a two-goal lead, they then recovered from going 3-2 down, to draw level at 3-3, before conceding a stoppage-time winner from Bryan Mbeumo.
