Wembley played host to the traditional curtain-raiser for the season with neither side naming any new signings in their starting XIs.
Teenager Nico O’Reilly did make his senior debut for City though after he impressed so heavily during pre-season.
And it was Pep Guardiola’s side who were looking much more comfortable early on as United dropped deeper and deeper as the half progressed.
It was another youngster, Oscar Bobb, who was running the show for the Premier League champions whilst Jeremy Doku had Diogo Dalot on toast down the left-hand side.
But it was Bobb who was the architect of the first real chance as his pass found James McAtee whose effort cannoned back off the post.
United eventually started to assert themselves on the game around the half hour mark as some great play between Amad Diallo, Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount saw the youngster attempt to play one pass too many to the England international, instead of shooting from inside the area.
Into the second half and almost immediately United thought they had broken the deadlock only for Bruno Fernandes’ stunning goal to be disallowed for offside.
New City signing, Savinho, joined the action just after the hour mark and almost made an immediate impression as his stinging shot was blocked before laying in Erling Haaland who couldn’t quite get on the end of the pass.
Marcus Rashford then missed a golden chance to give United a lead with 15 minutes to go as his effort from inside the area hit the the post.
But eventually that late United pressure paid dividends as Garnacho finished superbly.
That advantage lasted all of five minutes however as Bernardo Silva levelled the game with a late equaliser to send the match to penalties.
The spot kicks were tremendous but Jonny Evans skied over and Manuel Akanji netted to hand the trophy to City, 7-6 on penalties.
