44 migrants were rescued and three are missing after a boat sank early Sunday in international waters south of Italy. A Tunisian fishing boat, which was a short distance away, rescued the 44 people including Gambians, Guineans, Malaysians and Senegalese.

The shipwrecked people were transferred to the patrol boat Cp319 that landed them in Lampedusa.

During the night, a patrol boat of the Guardia di Finanza took charge of the search for the three migrants who were missing.

The 44 migrants, including a woman, reported that they had left Sfax in Tunisia on Friday night and had paid 800 euro each for the crossing.
