Former footballer and Ballon d’Or winner George Wear elected as Liberia’s president.

Former footballer and Ballon d’Or winner, George Weah has finally been erected as the president of  Liberia.

The 51-year-old former world footballer of the year won 13 out of 15 counties in the general elections. His opponent and serving vice president, Boakai Joseph won only two counties. He is now the 25th president of Liberia and is set to replace Nobel prize winner and current president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

Mr Weah is the only African footballer to win the highly respected Ballon d’Or. He played for clubs like Paris Saint Germain, Chelsea, Manchester City and Marseille.

“I am deeply grateful to my family, my friends, and my loyal supporters who contributed to our campaign during this extremely long election season,” Weah posted on Twitter shortly before the announcement of results.
