NUP’s Nalukoola wins Kawempe North MP by-election
The National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate, Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola has been declared winner of the Kawempe North MP by-election after beating nine other contenders for the seat.
The city lawyer garnered 17,764 votes while his closet contender, Ms Faridah Nambi of the ruling National Resistance Movement, got 8,593, according to the Electoral Commission.
The seat fell vacant following the death of then MP Muhammad Ssegirinya in January this year.
One of the Independent candidates, Hanifah Karadi Murerwa, came in third position with 381 votes, while Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate musician Sadat Mukiibi, alias Kalifa Aganaga trailed with 239 votes.
The other candidates included Ssegirinya’s former assistant, Muhammad Luswa Luwemba who got 240 votes, People’s Progressive Party(PPP)’s Ismail Musiitwa who garnered 39 votes, Democratic Party (DP)’s Henry Mubiru Kasacca who got 100 votes and Edward Stanley Engena-Maitum who polled 22 votes.
Others are Moses Nsereko who got 32 votes and Muhamood Mutazindwa who garnered 186 votes. They both contested as Independent candidates in the March 13 by-election that was held amid heavy security deployment and the arrest of journalists, some opposition MPs and their supporters.
According to the returning officer, Henry Makabayi, the total number of valid votes cast for candidates was 27,596 while the total number of ballot papers counted was 28,002.
At least 406 ballot papers were rejected as invalid while 49 were spoilt.
Mr Makabayi said at least 15 polling stations did not submit their tally results. Six of the affected polling stations reported to the Electoral Commission that voting materials, including the ballot papers, had been destroyed by some individuals before tallying of results.
“We shall investigate why the other polling stations did not submit their reports,” he said.
