ICE arrests more than 1,000 illegal immigrants over two days.
Homeland Security’s deportation agency said that it arrested 593 more illegal immigrants on Friday, putting its two-day total above 1,000.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement also said it lodged 449 “detainer” requests with state and local authorities asking that they turn over deportation targets when they are ready to leave prison or jail.
“Promises made, promises kept,” Homeland Security said in an email to reporters. “President Trump is already securing our border and deporting criminal aliens.”
The department sent photos of action, including ICE deportation officers making arrests, activity along the U.S.-Mexico border wall, and migrants lined up for what appears to be a deportation flight on a U.S. military airplane.
That’s part of Mr. Trump’s new orders assigned the military to assist in deportations. The Pentagon said it is providing air support to speed up deportations of thousands of migrants from Texas and California.
Friday’s ICE arrests came on top of Thursday’s 538 arrests. ICE said it also lodged 373 detainers on Thursday.
One of those Thursday arrests has turned into a public spectacle after the mayor in Newark, New Jersey, said officers “raided” a business without a warrant and arrested three illegal immigrants. The mayor said the officers briefly detained others during the investigation, including one military veteran.
ICE defended that operation, saying it was standard practice to “request identification to establish an individual’s identity.” The agency has not responded to the claim that it should have had a warrant to go inside the business.
ICE, on social media, also shot down rumors that it is paying a bounty for reports of illegal immigrants.
“For the record: Contrary to rumors, ICE is not giving a $750 reward for tips in support of civil immigration enforcement objectives,” the agency said.
And ICE also defended its arrests, pushing back on claims that it is “raiding” locations.
“Targeted enforcement operations are planned arrests of known criminal aliens who threaten national security or public safety,” the agency said.
